The new Mercedes GLA down a salt mine in Cheshire
Trying to find an unusual venue for new car launches is something that taxes the brains of car PR teams, and Mercedes came up with somewhere a little left field for the launch of the new GLA Compact SUV – the UK’s biggest salt mine at Winsford in Cheshire. The Winsford Rock Salt Mines – 130 miles of salt mining tunnels running under Cheshire – are the result of salt mining since the 19th century and now comprise of 130 miles of tunnels some 189 metres below ground, a void beneath the earth of 23 million cubic metres. Still a working salt mine, Winsford is also home to a massive storage facility for, among others, the National Archive, where constant temperatures of 14C make for an ideal storage environment.
The Ferrari 365 GTB/4
We have to confess that the Ferrari 365 GTB/4 – aka the Ferrari Daytona – is one of our favourite Ferraris. The Ferrari Daytona marked the start of the modern age of Ferrari for us; the end of the bulbous cars that went before and ended with the glorious 250 GTO, the Daytona was sleek and modern and as sexy as hell. Even those who don’t know one Ferrari from another would probably know the Daytona from its starring role in many a film – A Star is Born, The Long Goodbye, Gone in 60 Seconds and many more – or from the Miami Vice TV series (although that was a replica).
The Hennessey Venom GT – an American, Lotus Elise-based supercar – has clocked 265.7mph for a new world record top speed for a production car. The world top speed record for a production car has been held by the Bugatti Veyron (well, the Veyron Super Sport) at 258mph, but that’s a ‘limited’ speed for its production cars. The Veyron Super Sport actually hit 267.81mph at VW’s Ehra-Lessian track (it actually hit 269.8mph one way) but because production cars are limited to 258mph the higher speed doesn’t count.
